It is heartening to read more recent reports of 2015 and 2016 trends in Chief levels and other significant leadership roles which demonstrate progress in the narrowing of the gender gap. While there is still a long way to go even in the technology sector, it is at least moving in a positive direction. We hear more these days due to a few recent big-news cases (like Uber) about harassment and discrimination.

I find it unfortunate to see the positive growth of women in technology, especially in leadership positions, correlated even inadvertently as a solution to those problems. The mitigation of harassment-cultures is definitely an important direction too, but there is much more value to balancing the gender gap in leadership and all roles in technology (or any) sectors. If the last 18 months have demonstrated anything concrete in this space, it’s just how much more work we all have in front of us to achieve balance.

Here’s a dive referencing a few pieces worth reading, including an excellent New York Times piece, “Why Women Aren’t C.E.O.s, According to Women Who Almost Were.”
